Allergies, The Modern Plague

In recent years it would seem that more and more people are suffering from allergies. A person may become allergic to medicine, foods, or other environmental elements. Some allergic reactions make dealing with the effects extremely difficult. However your body's intolerance to some substances does not mean that you need to suffer continually. Recent medical advances mean that there are measures, for a person to take, which make coping with sensitivities far easier.

If you become aware that you could have developed an intolerance of something you should immediately contact your family doctor who should refer you to an allergist. The allergist will perform various tests in an attempt to identify the specific substance(s) to which you are intolerant and the the severity of your sensitivities.

Allergy Treatment

As soon as the allergist has identified to which substances you suffer hypersensitivity to he/she will advise on how to cope best with these allergies. In some cases your doctor may advise that a course of injections would be the most suitable allergy treatment. These injections help reduce the intensity of the body's reaction to allergens. Such injections are useful in the treatment of hypersensitivities to animals, plants and some other environmental irritants.

Sadly there are some allergies, such as allergy to peanuts, insect bites/stings and some medications, which can be life threatening. In such cases the allergist will carefully advise the patient on life saving measures which can be taken. In such severe cases of allergy as those mentioned it is important that friends and family of the patient are made aware of the seriousness of the allergy so that they too will understand what should be done in emergency circumstances.

There is a large selection of medications available to help with allergies. Antihistamines are an over-the-counter drug which can be taken daily and help reduce sensitivities considerably. Some stronger antihistamines can be obtained but usually only from a physician who should issue a prescription relatively easily. You will find these drugs far more effective fighters of allergy symptoms.

Other Options For Allergy Sufferers

Injections and drugs are not the only coping measures that can be taken if you suffer from an allergy. An increasing number of people are finding themselves having an allergy to airborne irritants such as pollen and dust. In such cases there are air purifiers available that can reduce the airborne particles by up to 99.9%, those using HEPA filters are usually the best option for allergy suffers. Prices of these units vary greatly depending on the type of filter used and the amount of air it is capable of filtering. The best option for most people is to install one in the room in which the sufferer spends most of their time, in most cases this will be the bedroom as there is nothing more annoying than trying to get to sleep when the pollen count is high if you suffer from hay fever! There are also small personal air filters available.

Another common allergy is to cats, dogs or other pets but the allergy can usually be controlled using antihistamines. However if these fail the only other option is to find the pet a new home. If you find such a thought too upsetting you could try using air filters, as mentioned above. It is also worth keeping the home well vacuumed (with a cleaner that has filters too) and ensure the pet is bathed and groomed often. If all these options fail and you wish to keep your pet you will just have to learn to cope with your allergy :-(
