England has some of the finest tourist attractions in the world and while many of these are found in London you will find many exciting places to visit in the various cities throughout the country. Visitor attractions such as Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London (pictured below right) are extremely well known tourist hot spots but it is not always the case that the most well known attractions are the best. England has an endless number of unique visitor attractions that appeal to all tastes. Those interested in standing stones and stone circles may consider Stonehenge the most important place to visit but these days access is restricted and you may well find that a more enjoyable day out could be had visiting Avebury Stone Circle (for the really adventurous a trip to the Callanish standing stones on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland gives the finest standing stone experience).
England has a rich and varied history and at one time it was the most powerful country in the world. As such many of the most powerful people in England became extremely wealthy and in virtually every county in England you will find fine country homes, fortified houses, castles and forts (most of which are open to the public. If you are interested in old buildings and architecture a visit to the old university town of Oxford should be high on your list of places to visit during England vacations.
As well as ancient buildings and fine catherdrals England has a great many modern visitor attractions with some, such as the London Eye (Millenium Wheel), becoming instant hits. While London remains the most popular English vacation destination there has, during the last few decades, a dramatic increase in the number of people taking city breaks in both the historic cities and the post industrial cities of the North. Places such as Manchester and Liverpool are quickly becoming top vacation destinations and as they rise to this new challenge more and more cash is being invested into ever more spectacular visitor attractions including the excellent Albert Dock complex in Liverpool which house the Tate and other quality attractions.
While more and more people are spending time in the cities of England there remains a large number of people visiting the seaside, especially when the sun shines. Blackpool has long been the most popular seaside resort in England but much of the success is down to meticulous forward planning of the highest standard. Blackpool seems to know exactly what their visitors want and they keep on attracting visitors of all ages.
Soccer is England's national sport (except during the Wimbledon Tournament when the country goes mad for tennis) and many of the most famous football clubs give guided tours. Teams such as Manchester United and Liverpool have worldwide appeal and visiting a football ground while a game is not being played is becoming amazingly popular.
Of course you can indulge in a great many other sports throughout the country and more locations are now catering for such sports such as mountain biking with new trails opening regularly. Head to the coast of Devon or Cornwall and surfing and other watersports are the main sports. Whatever sport you enjoy most you can be sure that you will find that England has some excellent places to visit which cater for your every need and desire.
